Auf Wiedersehen

It's been fun, but it's over. No more blogging. Everyone is too busy to contribute on a a regular basis, and I don't think we are offering anything of value or use. We still have the Silver Bullet fishing report / blog over at Millingtonnews.net, or the Family and Friends blog so drop in and read a report from time-to-time. Please bookmark the other blogs listed to the right, as these guys do offer some interesting stuff. I'll delete this blog in a couple of weeks.

God Bless,
Dave

Derivative Markets - Sound Familar?

Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit . In order to increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers - most of whom are unemployed - to drink now but pay later. She keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers loans). Word gets around about Heidi's drink now pay later marketing strategy and as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar and soon she has the largest sale volume for any bar in Detroit .

By providing her customers' freedom from immediate payment demands, Heidi gets no resistance when she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages. Her sales volume increases massively.

A young and dynamic vice-president at the local bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit. He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the alcoholics as collateral. At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders transform these customer loans into DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then traded on security markets worldwide. Naive investors don't really understand the securities being sold to them as AAA secured bonds are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics.

Nevertheless, their prices continuously climb, and the securities become the top-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses. One day, although the bond prices are still climbing, a risk manager at the bank (subsequently fired due to his negativity), decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar. Heidi demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but being unemployed, they cannot pay back their drinking debts. Therefore, Heidi cannot fulfil her loan obligations and claims bankruptcy.

DRINKBOND and ALKIBOND drop in price by 90 %. PUKEBOND performs better, stabilizing in price after dropping by 80%. The decreased bond asset value destroys the banks liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans. The suppliers of Heidi's bar, having granted her generous payment extensions and having invested in the securities are faced with writing off her debt and losing over 80% on her bonds. Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 50 workers.

The bank and brokerage houses are saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock negotiations by leaders from both political parties. The funds required for this bailout are obtained by a tax levied on employed middle-class non-drinkers.

Fishing Lines - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Sammy and I were discussing fishing line this morning. Since most of us will be re-spooling the reels this year, tell us of your favorite line as well as the stuff you really dislike. I'd like to hear of the good features as well as the bad experience with different brands.

Your comments and stories are appreciated.

The Banjo Minnow
I was bored last night and watched an infomercial - The Banjo Minnow. Babe Winkelman now endorses this product. Isn't this thing an offshoot of an earlier Banjo-something, the jig that swims backward? Has anyone other than Sam ever used this lure or one like it?

Free Classical Music

I love classical music....REALLY love the stuff. I found this site that allows you to download free .mp3 recordings or sheet music - and it's safe and legal too! I'll let MusOpen.com describe their site:

"Musopen is an online music library of copyright free (public domain) music. We want to give the world access to music without the legal hassles so common today. There is a great deal of music that has expired copyrights, but almost no recordings of this music is in the public domain. We aim to record or obtain recordings that have no copyrights so that our visitors may listen, re-use, or in any way enjoy music. Put simply, our mission is to set music free."

Some of the best recordings are those by the military bands; the renaissance and orchestra music is great too. A few of the performances on this site are...well, they are terrible. Listen or download some wonderful music and burn your favorites to a CD. Classical is relaxing when you drive. Hey, they even have four versions of O' Canada.

Miniatur Wunderland - Model Railroad

Leave it to the Germans. The video displays a German model railroad - the world's largest and most complex. It's located in Hamburg, and covers over 16,000 square feet with 10,000 train cars running on 6.8 miles of HO track. Its become Germany's biggest attraction, with over 5 million visits already. You will love the narrator's accent too! Click here if you wish to read more about this amazing display.

World's Cheapest Car

"Costing just 100,000 rupees ($1,979), the Nano will now go on sale across India next month, with deliveries starting in July." Click here for the story.

In Millington we call this a lawn mower.

His Nickname Is "Lucky San"

This 93 year old Japanese man survived the nuclear bombs at both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

That fortunate (or unfortunate) Japanese man reminds me of the newspaper ad for the lost dog:
LOST DOG - $25 Reward
Description: 3 legs, blind in right eye, missing left ear, broken tail, accidentally neutered. Answers to the name of Lucky.

Global Warming Caused by the Irish

We now have conclusive evidence of the cause of Global Warming, and it truely follows the Al Gore model of coming to a conclusion.

Look at the chart and compare Global Temperatures with the population increases of the Irish. The facts don't lie. So the question now is what do we do about it? One possible idea is to charge every Irishman a fee for the carbon footprints they create when they have children. Maybe some of you can come up with other ideas to share.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Ok, we all know that the word bonsai refers to the practice of creating a small ornamental tree that is cultivated with careful pruning over a long period of time. Its origins come from ancient oriental culture. But here is the question. Why did the Japanese pilots yell this as they flew their planes into our ships in the Pacific ocean?
Let's see how many of you can come up with the answer to this.
